IL’s #1 Young Gun junior Matt Rambo, A/M, La Salle (Pa.) committed to Maryland on Wednesday afternoon, according to a source from Dukes LC and later confirmed by Rambo in a phone interview.
A household name in the recruiting world ever since he dropped a remarkable 78 goals and 24 assists as a freshman at Abington (Pa.), Rambo made a mid-year transfer to nearby La Salle College H.S., where he helped guide the Explorers to a 14-6 record this past spring.
The decision should be a surprise to many who speculated that he would join his older brother, Rich, at Hofstra, but Matt mentioned it was important to “do my own thing” at Maryland.
In the past two weeks, it appeared as though the Terrapins had gained the lead for Rambo’s services despite the fact that Hofstra was considered the unofficial ‘clubhouse leader’ since the late summer. Besides Hofstra, he also strongly considered Virginia, Johns Hopkins and North Carolina.
“It was just the best fit for me,” Rambo said. “I wanted a big campus and it definitely has that, and the coaches were great and emphasize a comfortable family atmosphere.”
Another strong influence that Rambo noted was the fact that Maryland’s been considered a hot spot for Philly players recently, singling out current freshmen Kevin Forster (La Salle ’11) and Goran Murray (Haverford School ’11) as former Dukes teammates he’s very familiar with. Three more Philadelphia products – Tyler Brooke, Bradlee Lord and Ryan Lehman – will head to College Park next fall.
This commitment obviously bolsters the Terrapins’ recruiting class in a major way, which also includes No. 9 Connor Cannizzaro (attack – Cazenovia, N.Y.) and No. 19 Mac Pons (defense – Boys’ Latin, Md.) as members of IL’s Top 50 Rising Juniors.
Bruce adds: Coach Tillman is a tireless recruiter and with the verbal from Rambo, his efforts have been rewarded.
