Amazing how a team can rally when it loses its superstar. But Virginia seems to be running out of gas. From a halftime tie , Singler has started to find his range and Duke is up 43-35. Obviously I am here at Greensboro or why else would I be watching this game. Some other observations:

Georgia Tech is doing a lot of woofing about getting another crack at the Terps.

I saw Lefty in the hotel lobby and he is worried about this game tonight. BTW Lefty is a big Greivis fan.

The arena seems about 45% Duke and with the refs its 45.001%. Coach K seems to have found a new bench role as head cheerleader.

Maybe because there are no luxury suites but this arena really seems small. Maryland fans are tucked away in the corner.

Haven’t seen 1 Hurricane jersey.

Jeff Jones continues to keep this team in the game. 46-41 Duke –Coach K calls TO. Jones has 13.

In game one the following happened: Derrick favors had his beat game of the year shooting 9-15 with 21 points and 18 rebounds, Iman Shumpert his 3 threes, Greivis and Landon were a combined 7-27 and yet the Terps still won. Do the math. Tech had 24 offensive rebounds yet still lost, I doubt if any of these numbers will repeat today.

University of Ulster international sports scholar Dave Neal has picked up the Irish Superleague basketball’s Player of the Month award. American Neal picked up the accolade after helping the Ulster Elks side to wins against UL Eagles, Shamrock Hoops and Neptune in the month of FebruaryA former University of Maryland student, Neal is completing his MSc in Sport Management degree at Ulster’s Jordanstown campus.

The award follows in a tradition of Ulster’s international scholars winning the award, as last season Neal’s fellow countryman Matt Betley picked up the accolade for his performances. Ulster Elks Head Coach Dr Deirdre Brennan said: “This is a great achievement by Dave and the second year in a row that an international basketball scholar has achieved a national award. He has really found his form in the second half of the season and has demonstrated the qualities that saw him lead his alma mater University of Maryland to the last 16 in the nation last year.”

His exploits last month saw him average 27 points per game, as well as 14.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists, a record well deserving of the player of the month award. Neal was instrumental in the Ulster Elks’ winning streak last month, scoring 28 points against UL Eagles as well as adding 18 rebounds and five assists to the game. Against Shamrock Hoops, Neal notched up 27 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and topped off the three-game winning run at home against Neptune with 30 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. (sent to me by Taters John)

Before the Terps clinched the Regular Season ACC Title last Saturday, when I was asked about the major Terp successes in the past decade, the response was easy—The Title in 2002 and yes the 2004 ACC Championship. When I think about past successes the ACC Title —-Bias and Company won comes to mind. No it isn’t like winning the NCAA but it’s damn good. I was at Greensboro in 04 when John Gilchrist had what would be his last hurrah as a Terp. But what a run it was. I still vividly remember Gilchrist with the State flag draped over his shoulders. When asked what was the touighest Terp loss ever most fans respond with the 74 ACC Title game against NC State—not the Duke loss in the final four when Steve Blake got the only 2 palming violations in the history of his career. Check out this highlight video of the 74 Game--

This year as we enter the ACC tourney, I Gotta good feeling. Despite Greivis and Gary winning the awards the Terrapins are still unbelievably under the radar. Joe Lunardi dropped the Terps to a 6 seed and I do not hear anyone from ESPN really singing our praises. But the Terps have the”Man” down the wire and we all know that is Greivis. Toss in a few daggers from Eric and hopefully Landon finds his shot and guess what --it could be quite a weekend. But first let’s take care of Georgia Tech should they get by Carolina. No this isn’t a neutral court but normally it’s not too bad. However should Carolina win Thursday --all neutrality goes out the window. There will be 50% Tar Heel fans in the house. But we have #21 and that’s a lot. Memo to Ernie Grunfeld: watch the POY this weekend and learn what a passionate player is again.
