Summer Bird Wins Belmont–Borel’s Rating of His Horse Questioned
Kent Desormeaux finally won the Belmont , guiding 11-1 underdog Summer Bird past questionable 2nd place finisher Dunkirk. Dunkirk clearly fouled Charitable Man down the homestretch but was given a pass by the stewards. Calvin Borel definitely moved Mine That Bird too soon and eventually was unable to stay with the winner.
no question borel moved to early. with a horse that has one big run you need to wait. the first 3/4 of a mile was run fast enough for borel to stay back. the belmont backstretch is very long and a lot of jockeys who aren’t that familiar with belmont make the mistake of moving to soon. the winner stayed with 4-5 lenghts of the front runners racing on the rail saving ground for most of the race though he was taken back because of traffic around the wide far turn and came on strong.
