Terrapins Heavily Represented at Women’s World Cup in Prague

Current and former Terps represent USA, Wales, Canada, Ireland and Australia as the 2009 FIL Women’s World Cup commences in Prague, Czech Republic June 17-27. Pool play began with matches on Thursday and immediately pinned two current Terrapins against each other as sophomore Laura Merrifield and England battled junior Caitlyn McFadden and Team USA. After a slow start, the U.S. went on a devastating 9-0 run to break open the game after a 6-6 tie at halftime. In other World Cup action, Ireland crushed South Korea, 22-0. Ireland was led by Maryland alumni Lauren Cohen, Alex Kahoe and Krista Pelizzi. Pelizzi was tabbed Player of the Match after tallying five goals while Cohen added three goals. Australia, courtesy of former Maryland greats Jen Adams, Sarah Forbes and Tess McLeod along with current Terrapin attacker Sarah Mollison, took its first step to a repeat title, defeating Canada, 16-11, in its opener. Adams registered four goals and seven assists. Former Maryland midfielder and two-time ACC Player of the Year Dana Dobbie leads Team Canada.
