The women held serve in College Park, advancing as expected in a 15-10 win over UPenn. The Terps and Quakers played earlier this season and Maryland came out on top 12-6. The Quakers managed to keep the score deficit within 2-3 goals for most of the game on Saturday but Maryland pulled away late.
The Terps were led by their Big 3, consisting of Caitlyn McFadden, Sarah Mollison, and Karri Ellen Johnson. McFadden and Mollison each scored 5 goals, while Johnson added 4. Mollison spent most of the game flinging wrap-around goals between the legs of helpless Penn goalkeeper Emily Szelest. It was truly incredible how many times Szelest guessed high and Mollison went low. Szelest got ZERO help from her D on most of the Aussie’s goals.
An interesting stat from Saturday’s game: Penn dominated the draws in the first half, winning the battle 8-3, but still went into the locker room down 6-4. To win 5 more draws than your opponent but still be losing by 2 goals at the half had to be demoralizing.
Syracuse took down JMU, which means the Terps will take on the Orange and their Coach, the “living Legend” Gary Gait, in the Final Four next weekend in Towson. Northwestern and UNC will do battle in the other national semifinal game.
