Breaking News –It’s Official Harvard’s John Tillman Becomes Maryland’s 9th Men’s Lacrosse Coach

Congratulation are are in order for Search Committee Chair Michael Lipitz and Debbie Yow in  landing the perfect guy to bring Maryland back to the promised land in Men’s lacrosse . I blogged extensively about him yesterday but now that it’s official this is what I really like about the new Coach. His 12 years as an assistant under one of the most respected Coaches in the game, Richie Meade, has to have rubbed off in a most positive direction. He has been able to produce excellent offenses at Navy and Harvard where recruiting has to be tougher then it will be for him at Maryland. He will immediately get an offense loaded with talent that he has not had before. There are 6 Under Armour  All Americans on his list for next year. He has been able to produce winning situations at Harvard and Navy. I think giving him a long contract was both necessary and productive. Today Coaches can’t be on a short string.

Look at some of the most recent hires by Maryland’s Athletic Department—Laura Watten’s Softball squad hosted a NCAA regoinal this year, Cathy Reese brought a National Championship in Women’s Lax back to Maryland. Kerry McCoy has the wrestling team in the top 10 in the nation, Eric Bakich has just completed an incredible recruiting class in Baseball.

Junior Defenseman Max Schmidt commented on the hire :”I think it’s great,” he said. “I’ve heard a lot of great things about him, and I’m excited to meet him. I’ve heard through the grapevine that he’s just an unbelievable coach. He came into Harvard and turned that place around. I heard that he’s a great recruiter. He’s got a lot of discipline — he was with Navy for 12 years — and I feel like that’s something that we can use. That’s what we need, some discipline. I think he’s a going to be a good fit, a real good fit, and I’m looking forward to getting to know him and having him as our head coach.”

Over the next few days I will get reaction from the Lacrosse world and I am working on getting Coach Tillman on Terp Talk Thursday night.
