Potential Dropping Of Several Teams Saddens Terrapin Nation
The speculation has been around for years but now the reality might set in. Rumors of the end of the swimming and diving teams swirled around College Park today. The 27 teams as one was always a point of pride for Maryland, but this seems to be the end. Budgetary problems might curtail the amount of Terp Teams. Already there is a Save The Swimmers site.
What is there to say! I wrote a letter to the AD asking what was his plan to fund the athletic program and pay outrageous coaches salaries when Ralph was replaced and Gary leaving to take a newly created position. Amazingly, I got no response. Well, now we know there was no plan. So we have an AD in place that has no vision. How about we eliminate positions in the AD office to balance the budget and keep the student athletes at Maryland. Last time I checked it was a sports program. Just a thought!
the women’s swim team last over $900,00…the men’s over $600,000. baseball lost i think $900,000. hard to think team fundraisers will bring in enough to carry on and you have to raise that every year. md needs to find more donors to athletic dept. and sell more tickets. that’s hard to do when your football team is playing lousy and your basketball team isn’t expected to play.500 for the year. you can’t expect basketball to sellout much this year. hard to imagine football gaining any attendance next year. the average fan is holding on to their money more now than ever. the salary edsall received is what is the going rate for d 1 coaches. same with turgeon and those are the 2 revenue producing teams. don’t think the money problem was created by anderson. seems like money has been a problem the last few years. maybe that’s one of the reasons yow left.
