To me this was a huge win for the Terps. After the loss to Carolina last week, there had to be concern with the lack of offensive production in a game where Maryland dominated the X yet could not score enough. Thus the move of Connor Cannizzaro to attack and Cornell transfer Henry West to a added minutes. Henry West came through with 5 points (3G and 2 assists) and Cannizzaro chipped in a goal and 2 assists leading Maryland to a comeback victory and 1st place in the ACC. If my math is correct, Maryland also clinched a position in the ACC playoffs locking in a top 4 placement.
Charlie Raffa once again dominated the X, 14-5 over UVA. Niko contributed 10 saves including a few when UVA was up 4-1. The Cavaliers scored but once in the 2nd half as Maryland dominated possession time. Next up for Maryland is Robert Morris on Wednesday afternoon at 5PM.

Sophomore Henry West recorded his first career hat trick and totaled five points to help the No. 4 University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team come from behind for a 9-6 win over No. 8 Virginia Saturday afternoon in front of 3,424 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.
Maryland (8-1, 3-1 ACC) started off the scoring at 6:22 when junior Bryan Cole cut to the crease and finished off a feed from freshman Connor Cannizzaro.
Virginia (8-3, 1-2 ACC) answered with the next four goals, two to close out the scoring in the first quarter and the first two to open the second, to take a 4-1 lead over the Terps with 8:26 seconds remaining in the first half.
West scored the next two goals for the Terps to cut the Cavaliers lead to 4-3 with 2:44 remaining in the half. West’s first goal was an unassisted runner down the right alley at the 5:58 mark of the second. Just over three minutes later he finished low-to-high in traffic off of a feed from freshman Collin Heacock.
James Pannell of Virginia finished off the first half scoring with 2:35 remaining to give the Cavaliers a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
Maryland opened the second half with a four-goal run that would give the Terrapins a 7-5 advantage and the lead they ultimately wouldn’t surrender.
Cannizzaro started off the run with a goal at the 11:21 mark. The freshman dodged down the left alley and used a screen by fellow freshman Tim Rotanz to get free for the shot.
The Terrapins wore special Under Armour Freedom uniforms to honor members of the U.S. military wounded while serving their country. The jerseys are being auctioned off on umterps.com with all proceeds going directly to theWounded Warrior Project.
Quotes from opposing Coach Dom Starsia
On only having 10 possessions in the second half:
“It was a combination of small things. It was not just the faceoffs. I think the statistic didn’t seem to reflect it. I thought we had a couple of failed clears and we got beat to the groundballs. I thought we were competitive at the faceoff X, because it was always a scrap. I never thought it was as one-sided as the stats showed. So I thought we were on the hunt in the faceoff part of the game. Generally, Maryland beat us on the ground in the second half and that was the difference. So it was that and the fact that we weren’t winning faceoffs easily. We had a few chances to extend our lead, but their goalie made some great saves. So I don’t think it was any one thing. I just think it was a bunch of little things. I thought Maryland upped the ante in the second half.”
On the defensive progress shown by Virginia:
“I think it’s taken us a while to get going defensively. We’re starting to play now on the defensive end of the field the way that we were always going to play. We were just sluggish during the beginning of the year and we got a little better defensively and we’re playing at that end of the field. I give Maryland credit. They are getting alot of mileage from not a lot of guys. They keep coming back to those guys and they keep doing a nice job for them.”
