It’s their third meeting this season. The Terps won with a late move in South Bend on April 19; ND had a comeback 6-5 win in ACC semis at PPL.
Notre Dame lost the NCAA title in 2010 to Duke in overtime; they’ve never won a title. Maryland lost in the 2011 and 2012 finals and haven’t won a title since 1975.
The featured matchup is between Terp defender Goran Murray and ND lefty Matt Kavanagh. The face-off battle between MD’s Charlie Raffa and ND’s Liam O’Conor and Nick Ossello will be telling. ND can play at two speeds, while MD prefers to dominate the possession battle and slug it out with body punches. MD middie Mike Chanenchuk will draw the pole and get quick doubles; the Terps must be willing to keep the ball hot and jam it inside to Jay Carlson when the ND slides open up the soft under belly of their D. The Terp freshmen can’t get stage fright. Goalie Niko Amato must parlay his Championship Weekend experience if the Terps hope to break the title drought.
