Hate on Maryland All You Want Quint—Nobody in Terrapin Nation Cares

According to Quint, Maryland is now #5 in the nation, dropping 2 spots after wins over Loyola and Rutgers this week.  REALLY?. The difference in 4 or 5 could be a trip to Denver in the quarters to play Denver instead of playing in the friendly confines of Annapolis.  So according to Quint, the team that has been in the final four 3 of the last 4 years, the team that is currently 11-1, the team that has won its last 2 games without its most standout player in Charlie Raffa, and the team with undoubtedly the best defense in the nation is playing “visually unimpressive lacrosse.” Quint has insulted Maryland enough to make me sick.

This is what he said:

5. Maryland — The Terps survived Loyola on Wednesday despite the absence of face-off man Charlie Raffa. They found a way to win a game that could have easily slipped away. Maryland spokesmen have downplayed the significance of his injury. We will see. Without a possession advantage, the Terp defense was stung for 10 goals by Loyola. The good news…Maryland’s offense scored 11 behind a Jay Carlson hat-trick. They only committed five turnovers and controlled the non-face-off groundballs 18-6.

Sunday was the same story, with a one-goal win over Rutgers. A defense is only as good as its shorts, and Isaiah Davis-Allen is pretty darn good. That kid can play in front of me any day of the week. But Maryland isn’t playing lacrosse right now. It’s visually unimpressive. In fact, I’m shocked when I watch them and referees don’t hit them with the shot clock. Aimlessly passing the ball around the perimeter for 1:20, or faking possession shots isn’t the ticket to Philadelphia.

#2 North Carolina was easily handled by Maryland, beaten in every phase possible.

#3 Syracuse allowed 17 goals to NC–I wonder how Cuse would do if it lost its face off man for 2 games. Check Maryland –Syracuse last year.

By the way last year Maryland went 4-1 against the ACC and won the Regular Season Title before losing to Notre Dame in the Final Four.

Notre Dame–clearly the best right now–but if the Irish plays Maryland they will lose the face off and ground ball battles.

As for the schedule, I guess it’s Maryland’s fault that there is a boycott of Maryland from the ACC powers. Princeton, Yale on the road, Carolina neutral, Drexel, Navy on the road, Hopkins or Ohio State twice–this is weak scheduling—REALLY?

It’s simple–certain people just never want Maryland to win. It’s time to shut these people up by getting to the promised land.

who is more important to a team…the netminder or face off man.

i don’t follow lacrosse that closely but i don’t think what happens last year means anything regarding ranking the following year except for pre season polling.

when i have watched the terps the last few years the style of play is very boring. do they win. yes, but it’s like watching paint dry sometimes.

i do not feel, though, that style of play should penalize you in the rankings. it’s about wins and losses, and yes, the competition you play. and if you play a easy schedule your wins have less value than beating a good team. i don’t think you can make excuses for the schedule. it is what it is.

maybe going through denver rather than playing in annapolis will help this team. make em play with a chip on their shoulder, bring them closer, toughen them up more. if they are good enough to win a championship they should be able to win close or far away from home.

did you know the maryland state house in annapolis and is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use, dating to 1772.
they even have the same tour guide from the day they opened.

well, that’s one man on the streets opinion. gordon hathaway
