It’s been a while since we’ve heard from former Blue Devil Rasheed Sulaimon, who has flown under the radar after his dismissal from Duke amid sexual assault allegations in January.
Multiple reports on Tuesday linked the 6-4, 195-pound guard to Maryland.
The transfer to Maryland would not ultimately be surprising because Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon recruited the Houston native heavily out of high school while he was the head coach at Texas A&M.
It’s unclear at this time whether Sulaimon would have to sit out a year. If he graduates from Duke — where he is still enrolled and reportedly on track to graduate this summer — he would be immediately eligible to enroll at Maryland as a graduate student; however, if he does not complete his undergraduate degree, he will have to abide by the NCAA’s transfer rule and sit out the 2015-16 season.
Sulaimon’s dismissal came on the heels of two separate sexual assault allegations, reported by the Duke Chronicle. The sexual assaults were alleged to have occurred during the 2013-14 basketball season, but no charges were ever filed.
In announcing his decision to cut Sulaimon from the team, Mike Krzyzewski said he had “been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program.”
Adding Sulaimon to an already-loaded 2015-16 roster would certainly give the Terrapins an even larger boost. Six of the team’s nine top scorers are returning to College Park this fall. Turgeon’s team is also adding a top center prospect in Diamond Stone, who turned down an offer from Wisconsin, his hometown team.
