But wait, there’s more! No, this isn’t an infomercial. It’s an “in case you missed it” recap of some more Big Ten awards and honors for Maryland Terrapins athletes. You might have read our stories about the All-B1G women’s lacrosse team, or Casey Ikeda and the men’s lacrosse honors. We also had a broader look back at Maryland’s first B1G season and more recently noted the achievements of three Terps softball players in our BigTen Tournament preview.
Those of you who pay close attention to all things Maryland might be in the know but we have not been comprehensive in our coverage thus far. So here’s a little more good news.
Juliet Vongphoumy – Women’s Golf – All B1G First Team
Vongphoumy was one of eight B1G women’s golfers to be named to the All-Conference first team and was the only Maryland representative on either the first or second team. The senior from Providence, RI, was twice named Women’s Golfer of the Week in the conference. She won the award once in the fall season and again in the spring. She recently finished tied for second in the Big Ten Tournament – just one shot off the winning score – and won the Conference’s Mary Fossum Award as the conference player with the lowest stroke average relative to par for the season.
Vongphoumy also won Maryland’s women’s golf Sportsmanship Award. She began play as Maryland’s only representative in the NCAA Tournament Raleigh Regional on May seventh. Play will continue through May ninth.
David Kocher – Men’s Golf – All B1G Second Team
Just as Maryland women dominated the All-B1G Lacrosse team, Illinois ruled the men’s golf team. Illinois golfers occupied four of the six slots on the first team and another on the second team. Maryland’s David Kocher, however, was named as a second team All-Conference golfer. The Terps recently finished 10th at the Big Ten Championship and Kocher was one of only two Maryland golfers to finish in the top 20. He finished with a four round score of two under par 286. That scored tied him for third place in the Tournament.
Only a freshman, Kocher managed four top 10 and seven top 20 finishes in Maryland 10 tournaments on the year. Like Vongphoumy, he won the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. He will compete as an individual in the NCAA Tournament beginning Thursday, May 14th.
Brooke Griffin – Women’s Lacrosse – B1G Attacker of the Year
When the Big Ten announced its first women’s lacrosse All-Conference teams, nine players were unanimous selections. Three of those players were attackers and one of the attackers was Maryland redshirt senior Brooke Griffin. Griffin’s scoring has fallen off from its 2014 level but she has still registered 39 goals and 18 assists thus far in her final season as a Terp. Griffin is frequently the trigger of Maryland’s offense.
Megan Douty – Women’s Lacrosse – B1G Defender of the Year
Douty, another senior, was a Tewaaraton Award finalist in 2014. Douty is the anchor who leads a stingy Terrapins defense that yields a conference leading 7.28 goals per game – a total good enough for eighth best nationally. Douty is second on the team in ground balls with 24 and caused turnovers with 19. The senior from Fair Haven, NJ plays a critical role in shutting down the opponent’s top scorer and in clearing the ball and initiating Maryland’s fast break offense.
Taylor Cummings – Women’s Lacrosse – B1G Midfielder of the Year
Only a junior, Cummings has likely generated more ink and pixels than any player currently on the Terrapins’ roster. The reigning Tewaaraton Award winner as the top player in college lacrosse, Cummings leads Maryland in points, assists, ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls. Her 53 goals scored is second to freshman Megan Whittle.
Thursday afternoon the award committee announce the five finalists for the 2015 Tewarraton Award and it should come as no surprise that Cummings is again on that short list. As impressive as Cummings’ numbers were that earned her the award as a sophomore, she has already surpassed those totals in points, assists, ground balls and caused turnovers. With 10 goals and four draw controls, she will set personal bests as a Terp in those categories as well. We’ll know on May 28th if she will become the second straight Maryland player (following Katie Schwarzmann) to win back to back Tewaaraton Awards.
