Hold on to your hats everyone. The big news of the day in NCAA women’s lacrosse is the announcement of the five finalists for the 2015 Tewaaraton Award. The list includes three finalists from last season headed by the reigning Tewaaraton winner, Maryland’s Taylor Cummings.
As the teams of all five finalists head into the NCAA Tournament, each player stakes a different claim which Will Likely be affected by the depth of her team’s run in the NCAA Tournament.
Cummings, who was recently named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, is on pace to improve all, or nearly all of the stats she compiled on her way to the 2014 award. The junior currently has 82 points (53 from goals scored), 29 assists, 39 ground balls, 125 draw controls and 33 caused turnovers. Her per game averages for points, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers top the Big Ten, and she ranks fifth in the nation in points and draw controls.
In 2014, while leading the Terps to a 23-1 record and the program’s 11th NCAA Championship, Cummings finished with 87 points (63 goals and 24 assists), 128 draw controls, 31 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers. The Terrapins enter the 2015 NCAA Tournament as the top overall seed, the B1G Champion and carrying a 17-1 record.
The other finalists include Florida’s Shannon Gilroy and Kayla Treanor of Syracuse who were also finalists in 2014. Sara Mannelly is the first Tewaaraton finalist from Boston College. The fifth finalist is Notre Dame defender Barbara Sullivan.
The National Museum of the American Indian will host the 15th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on May 28, 2015.
