Thursday afternoon quarterback Everett Golson announced his intent to transfer from Notre Dame. The six foot senior graduated a semester early and may be eligible to play immediately.
He’s had a rather checkered career in South Bend both on and off the field. Golson struggled on the field last season when he led the NCAA in turnovers. Off the field, he was suspended in 2013 for “poor academic judgment” and was not enrolled in the school.
Although both Golson and several SEC schools have expressed some mutual interest, the latter situation presents a roadblock for immediate eligibility. The SEC, which has seven criteria for immediate graduate eligibility, would have to grant a waiver from a rule that states, “The student-athlete has not been subject to official university or athletics department disciplinary action at any time during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution [excluding limited discipline applied by a sports team].”
In 2012, Golson led the Irish to an undefeated regular season before they lost to Alabama in the BCS “title game.” Notre Dame started the 2014 season 6-0 before the quarterback’s turnover problems turned from a wave into a tsunami. The Fighting Irish lost five of their last six games and Golson finished with 22 turnovers.
Neither Maryland nor Golson have expressed any overt interest in one another.
