I truly believed Maryland would defeat the Tar Heels today going into the game. But my conviction wavered a little after taking an informal poll among the “experts” on press row. However when Hopkins took apart Syracuse though only winning by a goal, I was convinced that the artificial high rankings of the ACC was just that–artificial. When a #5 team like Duke takes apart a #1 like Cuse in the ACC tourney what does it really mean.
As all the ACC teams avoided Maryland this year save Carolina, Maryland goes into the final four 2-0 vs the ACC. I guarantee you Johns Hopkins will be a much tougher out then Syracuse would have been. Notre Dame stands strong as perhaps the best team in the land—maybe.
It’s hard to pick out the hero of the game today but I will share it between goalie Kyle Bernlohr and the Coaching staff. Coach Reppert “tweaked” the offense and Coach Conry devised a defense that smothered most of Carolina’s weapons.
The offense was a glorious sight to behold, with everyone participating unselfishly and Brian Cole being recipient of many passes that led to easy shots for him.
Matt Dunn, Casey Ikeda and the entire close in defense was simply stellar today holding one of the most potent offenses to only 4 goals in 3 periods.
So in Coach Tillman’s era the Terps have now been in 4 final fours in 5 years, an incredible feat. We all know what’s left. It’s time to seal the deal. Hopefully this is our year.
