Sophomore Alex Anthony scored a late free kick equalizer to help the Maryland women’s soccer team draw reigning national runner-up Virginia, 2-2, in exhibition action at Klockner Stadium Monday night. The Terrapins, competing in their only tune-up match before their season opener Friday night, also received a goal from Amanda Gerlitz. Virginia won a penalty shootout that occurred in lieu of extra time.
“For our first time out this season, I’m really proud of the effort our kids put forth,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “Virginia showed its class, but we stuck in the fight and found a way to tie it late.” The Cavaliers struck first in the 13th minute through Makenzy Doniak before Gerlitz tied the game in the 24th minute. The senior found a knock down from a corner kick and struck from the top of the 18.
Anthony sent the game into penalties in the 89th minute, scoring directly from a free kick at the top of the box.
Maryland will face Kent State in its home opener Friday at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
