The USGA ruling was petty and absurd. Tom Boswell had it right when he labeled them the United States Goofball Association. Both players agreed and the on site official ruled that Johnson had not contributed to moving the ball backward maybe a 16th of an inch on that fifth hole putt.
The USGA then lets Johnson play six more holes before approaching him and telling him that they might penalize him a stroke but that they would wait until after the round to make their final decision.
Imagine an NFL game where a second quarter field goal that goes over the upright and the on field crew rules good. Midway through the third quarter a replay official calls and say that it might not have been good. The crew then goes to the team that’s leading and tells them they might be taking that field goal away but they won’t make a final ruling until after the game. This is analogous to what the USGA did to Dustin Johnson. Just plain idiocy.
Kudos to Johnson for scrambling to make some tough pars on 13 through 17, for absolutely killing his drive and second shot on 18 and sinking the type of putt that has been a trouble spot for him. The USGA should also send telegrams of thanks to Shane Lowry and the other players for playing just poorly enough to render their sequence of absurd decisions moot and avoiding what could have been a horrific and controversial ending to the showcase tournament.
Congrats to Dustin, for overcoming the stupidity and prejudice of the governing body.
Gold prides itself in its rules, like all sports. But for the officials to subsequent to an on course decision, bring question to that decision without any finality to the middle of the round, smelled of incompetence and perhaps bias.
Golf review does not have an irrefutable evidence rule. It just seems to have an arbitrary one, and this embarassing fiddle is the result.
I thought they were doing what they could to prevent not one of their own CC boys from winning.
Dustin has that history of drugs and other evidence that caused his 1 year suspension before. He is not one of the fair haired usga favorites, obviously.
Time to change the rule system to irrefutable evidence to cover incompetence, like baseball and football.
