If you have noticed I barely write about exhibition football games. I certainly do not go to them anymore. And this year I barely have watched them.
Ben Watson is now out for the year from an injury that occurred in a totally meaningless game. Tony Romo will miss at least half the season and his career could be on the line.
Harbaugh has suggested that injuries would be less likely to happen in controlled scrimmages or certainly if there were just 0ne or 2 games.
Fans rarely go anymore and it is truly one of the biggest ripoffs in sports. Why then are the games played? Money? With the millions that the NFL owners make, would not one extra regular season game equate the difference. This year the Ravens scaled down the cost of these games to about 1/2 of what they were but added to the regular seating pricing. Now the Ravens are without 2 key ingredients to the team — Ben Watson for the season and Kenneth Dixon for 4 or 5 weeks. What can this do? It can help ruin the regular season games that so capture this city’s heart. There are always going to be injuries that effect season but to add to that possibility by playing these insidiously stupid pre-season games makes no sense.
Our owner is a true Baltimorean who is well versed on the history of all of our teams. We were lucky that he purchased the team, because his number one concern is winning not the absolute bottom line. I have never had the chance to hear him talk about exhibition football but I would be shocked if he didn’t want change. He was a fan way before he was owner.
