OK I’m biased. But I’m right. Here’s my reasoning:
The ultimate goal for Matt Rambo was the Natty–this was achieved.
Matt has been the leader of this squad for 4 years. He has developed into a premier playmaker as well as scorer.
This year of the 5 nominees, Rambo face the toughest schedule by far and was always the “target ” of the opposing team. So how did Rambo respond, by helping to make every player on the squad better, never worrying about his personal numbers. His performance against Hopkins was masterful.
Matt Rambo became the all time scoring leader in goals and total points over every legendary player whoever donned the Terrapin uni.
Down the wire there was Rambo scooping up crucial ground balls and riding the clears to turnovers. His motor never stops.
Matt Rambo lived up to legacy of wearing Maryland’s fabled #1 jersey and then some. 4 Final fours–2 runner ups, and 1 National Title.
Bottom line the award includes performance in the playoffs. 20 points in 4 games. Baptiste might be one of the greatest face off guys ever, but he was not able to complete his domination once he faced the Terps. Ben Reeves is fantastic but could not get Yale past the 1st round. Spencer has had 2 great seasons but this year Loyola bowed out in round one. Conor Fields scored an incredible amount of points against a much less difficult schedule but when Albany faced Maryland in the quarters it was Rambo who stood out.
Thursday night in DC should cap an incredible Terrapin career for the Philadelphia LaSalle High Scool graduate. But no matter what, he has joined Joe Walters and Frank Urso as one of the greatest Terps ever!!!!! Hail RAMBO.
