The Wizards are now the 27th team in the NBA to own a G-League (formally known as D-League, G stands for Gatorade) team. The team will play at the Wizards new practice facility starting in fall 2018, which in addition to being the home of the G-League club, will also be the Mystics home floor. The yet to be named arena will be located at the site of the former psychiatric hospital, St. Elizabeth, on the East Campus. The facility will open before the 2018 Wizards season. The arena section of the venue will have a capacity of about 4,000 people. This means that the Mystics will move from the largest arena in the WNBA (Verizon Center) to the smallest, however 4,000 seats are about average for the G-League.
The G-League is not as highly regarded as the baseball minor leagues or the AHL by most. The reason for this being that most NBA players don’t go through the G-League. Additionally, those players that are deemed inadequate for the NBA, often will go overseas to a high-class league that pays more (DJ Strawberry). However, the G-League is becoming more common as it expands and ages. This G-League team won’t have much immediate impact on the Wizards but will start to yield results long-term results a few years down the line.
