It was great to see the NCAA Champs take the field today. Of course it was a bit confusing as Coach Tillman had the players wearing different numbers as he always does. But it was pretty clear that Jared Bernhardt, Conor Kelly, and Tim Rotanz pickup up where they left off last year.
Georgetown played a typical Kevin Warne type of game, fighting toe to toe on every ground ball and actually dominated some of the 1st half before the Terps charged out early in the 2nd half. Warne was Tillman’s first defensive Coach at Maryland and helped instill that “play like a Terp” spirit at College Park. I know that his first few years at Georgetown were disappointing but I guarantee that this will be a comeback year for the Hoyas after watching their efforts today.
Bernhardt was stupendous from behind the cage. I am not sure we have seen that much quickness and agility from a Terrapin dodger in years. Without some tremendous play from the Georgetown goalie.
Jared could have scored 5 or more goals as he continuously found himself alone in front of the goal.
Conor Kelly, now wearing the “honored” #1 jersey for Maryland scored twice in a somewhat quiet game for him as Tillman tried to take a look at several guys on the midfield.
Maryland seemed to have won the face off wars but I just comment on who stood out because of the number switching.
Both Coaches unloaded the bench in the 4th quarter. No scoring was posted because it was a SCRIMMAGE and a damn good one at that!!!
It’s off to UVA for a final scrimmage next week and then it’s opening day on Feb 10 at Noon against Navy.
