Bruno Fernando to get an NBA look

Maryland basketball center Bruno Fernando is going through the pre-draft process but has not hired an agent.  This leaves open the possibility of his return to the Terps.

Last season, Justin Jackson took the same steps and returned to Maryland instead of leaving school.

Here is the press release from UMD –

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland forward Bruno Fernando has announced that he will declare for the NBA Draft but has not hired an agent. He has until May 30 to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft and retain his college eligibility.

“Bruno and I have had a number of conversations regarding his decision to explore the NBA Draft,” said head coach Mark Turgeon. “We support him in this decision and will continue to guide him throughout this process. This direct evaluation will help provide Bruno an honest assessment of where he stands among NBA teams. Upon gathering all of the information, Bruno will be able to make the best decision for his future.”

A rising sophomore, Fernando was named to the All-Big Ten freshman team after averaging 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. The Luanda, Angola native was twice named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. His 6.5 rebounds per game and 57.8% shooting percentage led all Big Ten freshmen, while his 1.2 blocks per game ranked third among all first year players in the conference.

Even though Maryland has been very unimpressive during Mark Turgeon’s reign as head coach they have lost more players to leaving early than many much more impressive programs for example take Villanova and West Virginia. Could this be because the players realize that they are not going to improve their basketball skills by playing for the hapless Mr. Turgeon??? I cannot think of one player who has gotten better while playing under his guidance. I fell sorry for Kevin Heurter who really would be a major star if he played in a better system. He is the real star of this team but Turgeon does not know how to use his talents. By prolonging Turgeon’s career at Maryland, we are postponing Maryland’s return to basketball prominence.
