A Look At The Terps Offense

Quarterback

Kasim Hill #11

Reports have it that Kasim Hill will be the starter come Saturday. The redshirt (medical) freshman has played in three games last season including a clutch performance against Texas after starter Tyrell Pigrome went down with a torn ACL. Hill threw for 230 yards and two TD’s and ran for 60 yards and one touchdown (when? over the course of the season?).

This hypothetical decision is most likely based on Matt Canada, Maryland’s OC and now Interim Head Coach. The pro style that he brings to College Park will favor Hill over Piggy. Kasim will be better suited to take snaps from under center and make the throws with the accuracy that Canada offense demands.

Running Backs

Running back by committee might seem like the way to go given the talent at this spot, but Canada does love himself a good feature back

Ty Johnson #24:

Number change alert!!!

Johnson is arguably the heartbeat of Maryland offense with over 1800 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past two seasons. He will look to finish off his Maryland career with a bang and will defiantly have the opportunity. The Fort Hill product came to Maryland under the radar and has progressed to the edge of becoming a superstar. Ty is by far one of the best interviews on the team and it has been great to get to know him.

Lorenzo Harrison III #2

LoLo enters his Junior year looking to take the next step in his devolvement. Last year Harrison rushed 137 times for 622 yards, the Dematha product is one of the most explosive players on the Maryland roster. If the Maryland line can clear the holes Harrison should be dancing in the end zone quite a lot this year.

Javon Leake #20

My sleeper player of the year is Javon Leake. Leake showed flashes of greatness at the end of his freshman year. He carried the ball only nine times for 99 yards and 2 TD’s, Leake also returned the ball 12 times for 232 yards. Javon Leake is the kind of power back that coach Canada will use to great effect.

Tayon Fleet-Davis #8-

(From UMTerps) The 5’11, 226 pounds running back from Potomac HS A consensus 3-star recruit according to all major recruiting databases … 2016 Second Team Washington Post All-Metro … totaled more than 30 career touchdowns at Potomac … averaged over six-yards a carry in his career at Potomac … ran for 832 yards and 10 touchdowns, in addition to catching 25 passes for 433 yards as a senior … ran for 748 yards and four touchdowns and caught two touchdowns as a junior … ran for 356 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore … led Potomac to 27-9 record in three years on the team. I see Fleet-Davis as the H-back (based on the Joe Gibbs definition) and a secondary tight-end or the motion tight end he moves back and forth pre-snap he won’t be the blocking tight end but will be playing some tight end.

Anthony McFarland #5-

(From UMTerps) A consensus 4-star recruit according to all major recruiting databases … rated the 3rd-best running back nationally and second best player in the state of Maryland by 247 Sports and Rivals … 2016 Under Armour All-American … missed senior season due to injury … 2015 Second Team Washington Post All-Metro … ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns (8.5 yards/carry) as a junior, while also catching 25 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns … 2014 Honorable Mention Washington Post All-Metro … rushed for 1124 yards (10.1 yards/carry) as a sophomore, in addition to catching 15 passes for 312 yards and 12 touchdowns … was also considering Alabama, Miami, Penn State and Georgia.

I expect that he will be a Wing back that plays both WR and RB and takes a lot of carries via jet sweep

Wide Receiver-

There aren’t many certain things here as Maryland returns less than 10% of it’s production from last season.

Tavion Jacobs #12-

Jacobs had 47 catches for 553 yards last season. Jacobs is expected to lead the Terps this season and could benefit from having Kasim Hill and a new offense.

Jahrvis Davenport #9

Davenport has always been expected to do big things in College Park. The 5’9 190-pound receiver from Tampa will have a final chance to reach his expectations. Last season he had 13 receptions for 123 yards and 5 TD’s

DJ Turner #1

Number change Alert!!!

Turner the Dematha product hasn’t put it together since his arrival in College Park. Now a junior, Turner looks to take a larger role for Terps 2018-2019 and will get his chance this is a wide-open field so Turner will get his shot.

Other than that, the Terps have had 10 commits in the past two cycles

2018 class

Darrly Jones 3 star

Jeshaun Jones 3 star –

Sources say he has been impressive

Dontay Demus Jr. 3 star –

My favorite 2018 wide out commit

Brian Cobbs 3 star

2017 class

Sean Nelson 3 star

Tahj Capehart injured

Jayden Comma 3 star

Carlos Carriere 3 star

MJ Jarrell 3 star

Tight End

Maryland had a total of ZERO catches from the Tight End’s last season, expect that to change.

Avery Edwards #82-

At 6’4 240 pounds Edwards has always been a guy I look for to have big numbers, but under Walt Bell’s scheme, it didn’t happen. With new head coach Matt Canada, the story is fit to change.

Noah Branes #80-

Appeared in eight games on special teams last season, as a recruit he was a 3 star that had both receiving and blocking skills

Chigoziem Okonkwo #17-

(from UMTerps) A consensus 3-star recruit across all major recruiting outlets … rated the eighth tight end in the country by ESPN … helped lead Hillgrove to an 8-4 record and a regional championship as a senior … also received offers from Wisconsin, Georgia Tech and Navy. Look for Okonkwo.

O-Line

LT Derwin Gray #55

LG- Sean Christie #70

C Jonhey Jordan #73

RG- Brendan Morre #64

RT- Damien Prince #58

The Line is stronger than it has been in years with multiple players on award watch lists this unit could be one of the best in the Big Ten. With tons of experience, this is the year if any for this unit to produce.
