I would expect to see the BOR much more involved in the football scene. Having more committees and conferences is usually not a good thing. I am profoundly disturbed by the media reports yesterday about verbally abusive and intimidating conduct by Maryland football coaches and staff towards our student athletes on the team.
Such behaviors contravene the educational mission and core values of our University. They are unacceptable. They will not be tolerated.

I am extremely concerned by the allegations of unacceptable behaviors by members of our football staff detailed in recent media reports. We are committed to fully investigating the program.
At this time, the best decision for our football program is to place Maryland Head Football Coach DJ Durkin on leave so we can properly review the culture of the program. This is effective immediately. Matt Canada will serve as interim head coach.

While there is a growing list of current and former players that are throwing their support behind DJ Durkin, there is perhaps an even stronger group who is willing to support the Maryland HC. Keisha Staples, mother of Terps defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr., told the associated press she is close with a group of about eight players’ parents who would like to meet with athletic director Damon Evans to state their ”full support” for coach DJ Durkin.

Maryland has placed head football coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave after an ESPN report depicted the culture surrounding the team in a very negative light, going as far as to imply that the culture was responsible for the death of Jordan McNair. The Terps have named offensive coordinator Matt Canada as the interim despite he never having coached a football game in his career.
