There’s so much good news happening around Maryland athletes and athletics, I can’t keep up. This is the third in a series of stories and my apologies go out in advance to the programs and and athletes I might miss.

So, because I have such warped and misplaced priorities, I had planned to start with a story that features the student part of being a student athlete. Then I came to my senses and thought, @“Who’s interested in … Read More »

The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association (IWLCA) named its 2015 All-America Teams Monday and, not surprisingly, the Maryland Terrapins were well represented. Of the 48 players named to the first, second or third teams five (about 10.5%) are Terps. Three Terps made the first team with one each on the second and third teams. On the first team, only Shannon Gilroy of Florida and Meg Markham of Penn and the three Terrapins are from non-ACC schools. Maryland has the most … Read More »

Before I start

Did I ever need Sunday. Saturday was a very difficult one for me. First, I woke up with the misery inducing stomach virus I’d contracted Friday still bent on making me uncomfortable. Then, while not unexpected, the agita intensified with Jen Adams’ Loyola women’s lacrosse team lost at Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal. How nice it would have been to have the team coached by likely the greatest player to don a Maryland women’s lacrosse uniform … Read More »

The last quarterfinal game in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament Sunday afternoon between the top seeded and home standing Maryland Terrapins and the eighth seeded Northwestern Wildcats came with two guarantees. First, it guaranteed one Final Four spot for what would become the lone Big Ten team remaining. Second, it assured that, for the first time in seven seasons, either Northwestern or Maryland would not make a championship weekend appearance.

After a close first half in which they managed to … Read More »

If you are a Maryland Terrapins baseball fan, the document below is of real importance to you. The Big Ten released the bracket for the 2015 conference Tournament and Maryland is the number four seed. Interestingly, the first team the Terps will play. the Michigan State Spartans, is one of the conference foes Maryland didn’t meet in the regular season’s unbalanced schedule. The Spartans are the fifth seed.

Last season at this time, the Terrapins were on a roll. Maryland … Read More »

A little perspective

It’s a bit disconcerting to see the Maryland Terrapins and Northwestern Wildcats women’s lacrosse teams preparing to meet in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game. Why? Look back to 1995. Over the past 20 years, the two programs share 16 national championships (nine for the Terps and seven for the Wildcats). True, the teams have only four NCAA Tournament meetings over that span but all four have come either in the championship game or in the semifinals with … Read More »

Periodically throughout the spring, I have received news releases announcing that a pair of athletes from one of the Big Ten member institutions had received something called the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Because I write for blogs covering the University of Maryland, I ignored all the releases about the student athletes from Nebraska, Purdue, Iowa and so on. Yesterday, my inbox dinged with the relevant news. The winners of the Big Ten Medal of Honor for Maryland are Malina … Read More »

If you are a sports fan, the Baltimore – Washington metropolitan area is among the best places in the country to be right now. Even if the news isn’t always good, there’s certainly lots of it.

You can follow either or both of the two major league baseball teams. NBA Basketball? The Wizards’ playoff run has that covered. The same goes for the Capitals’ who are in the second round of the NHL playoffs.
