The Maryland baseball team’s trip to Columbus on May’s second weekend was a bit like a visit you might make to the doctor when something feels amiss but you’re not quite certain of the prognosis or treatment. The three game series came with three options relative to the Terrapins’ NCAA fate:
Maryland sweeps three games: Just what the doctor ordered as close to a clean bill of NCAA health as possible.
Take two wins: And call me after you play Liberty … Read More »
OVERTURE
Officially, Sunday’s NCAA Tournament Women’s Lacrosse game between the Maryland Terrapins and the visiting UMass Minutewomen was a second round game. However, as the top seeded team, Maryland had earned a first round bye and would be playing their first game since losing a week ago Friday in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal to Ohio State.
Perhaps because I’ve been covering too much softball lately, when I watched UMass beat Jacksonville Friday to play their way into Sunday’s second … Read More »

The Maryland nine traveled to Columbus for as important a three game series as they have faced as the 2015 NCAA baseball season winds toward postseason play. After playing themselves squarely onto the NCAA Tournament bubble when Indiana swept them in College Park in their last Big Ten series, the Terps’ weekend got off to just the start they needed in Friday night’s 13-4 demolition of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Maryland ace Mike Shawaryn took the hill making his 13th … Read More »

You might have read our stories about the All-B1G women’s lacrosse team, or Casey Ikeda and the men’s lacrosse honors. Although she seems upbeat, Maryland head coach Courtney Scott-Deifel doesn’t seem particularly happy as the Maryland Terrapins softball squad prepares to enter their first Big Ten Tournament. And with good reason. After moving above .500 in conference play with a sweep of Penn State, the Terps dropped seven of their final eight games to finish 9-14 and tied for eighth in the league.
Here’s some of the good news:
The nine wins in conference play alone nearly equals the entire output … Read More »

Many observers including Maryland men’s lacrosse coach John Tillman expressed some surprise when the Terrapins received the sixth seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Despite their semifinal loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Women’s Lacrosse Tournament, no one seemed surprised when the Terps women received the top overall seed for the NCAA Tournament.
Stony Brook and UMass are the only other teams entering the Tournament with just a single loss. Though they sport a … Read More »
Sometime during Indiana’s five run third inning the headline “Hoosiers Take Terps to Church” began bubbling into my consciousness. Given the 11:00 am Sunday start, Annie Savoy’s opening monologue from Bull Durham and the currency of the Hosier song “Take Me to Church” it seemed appropriate. Maryland pitchers issued 11 walks and the hitters made an average Indiana pitching staff look strong for the second consecutive game as the Hoosiers completed a series sweep handing the Terps a sound 6-2 … Read More »
