The Maryland Terrapins got some timely hitting early, five strong innings from recently name All-American Mike Shawaryn, one stellar play by Lamonte Wade, and strong relief from Robert Galligan, Bobby Ruse and closer Kevin Mooney to defeat the Ole Miss Rebels in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The 40th win of the 2015 season not only equals the record for most wins in a season set just last year but more importantly keeps Maryland in the winner’s bracket … Read More »

In sports, just as in conferring awards, sometimes the favorite wins and sometimes there are upsets and surprises. At the 2015 Tewaaraton (pronounced in its native Mohawk “dey-wah-ah-la-dohn”) Awards – the award given to the nation’s best collegiate male and female lacrosse players the expected came to pass. For the first time in the history of the award, a men’s player repeated as the Tewaaraton winner. Albany’s Lyle Thompson flew solo in 2015 after sharing the award with his brother … Read More »

As I have said repeatedly, there was just no way Taylor wasn’t going to win the award again. She was far and away the best player in Women’s lacrosse in the country and arguably one of the best ever. Taylor finished the season with: 100 points (63 goals, 37 assists) and ranked in the top five in draw controls (143) and points per game (4.55). She also was eighth in caused turnovers with 36.

For those unfamiliar with the format of an NCAA Baseball Tournament Regional, it consists of 16 four team pods who play in a double elimination format. Simply put, this means you play until you win the region or lose two games whichever occurs first. As a result, win or lose against Mississippi on Friday, Maryland will play at least one more game on Saturday. We have previewed the game with Mississippi here.

Now let’s take a look at the … Read More »

The players on the Maryland men’s lacrosse tribe likely have a word to describe John Tillman. That word is coach.

The members of my tribe also have a word to describe John Tillman.

That word is mensch. The word has become common enough that the Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines it:

Mensch:

a person of integrity and honor

The tribe of Maryland lacrosse fans should also have a word to describe John Tillman.

That word is: winner

Yes, winner.

Sunday morning as we sat in the press box at Lincoln Financial Field awaiting the start of the NCAA men’s lacrosse championship game, Terp Talk host and sports maven Bruce Posner and I talked about the NCAA prospects for Maryland’s baseball team. Bruce was confident that, with a record of 39-21 the Terps were, essentially a shoe in to make the field of 64.

I felt a bit less sanguine. After losing the Big Ten Tournament final to Michigan, Maryland’s … Read More »

Forty – the span of time in years since Maryland men’s lacrosse last won a national championship.

Seven – the number of times the Maryland men’s lacrosse team had reached the championship game before May 25, 2015.

Four – the number of times the Maryland Terrapins and Denver Pioneers had met before Monday’s championship game. And the number of wins by Maryland over Denver.

The Maryland women’s lacrosse team waited two years for the game against the North Carolina Tar Heels Sunday night. Their loss in the 2014 regular season and their win in the 2015 regular season simply didn’t carry the equivalent emotional weight. The only game the teams have played in the last three seasons that means anything to Maryland’s upperclassmen is the bitter triple overtime loss in the 2013 national championship game. That was the game the that festered just under … Read More »

It was the rematch many Maryland fans wanted. A win on Saturday by the Terps over the Blue Jays would probably mean more than winning the first Trophy game. The prize to the victor would be a trip to the NCAA Championship game and a chance to face the Denver Pioneers who upset the top seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11-10 in overtime in the first semifinal. The second game was nearly as thrilling with the Terps holding on for … Read More »
