I’ll have a more comprehensive report at the end of the weekend but for now, let’s let it be sufficient to say that Friday was a good night for Maryland’s bat and ball sports. Both Terrapins softball and baseball opened three game home sets Friday night and each was important for its own reasons.
At the softball complex, the Terps took on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the next to last home series of the season. As the weekend … Read More »
Sophomore right handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn threw eight scoreless innings and struck out a career-high 13 to lead the No. 22 Maryland baseball team past Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in front of 1,370 spectators at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (26-10, 8-4) plated their only two wins of the game in the second. With the win, Shawaryn tied John Rayne (1989-92) for the Maryland all-time career wins record.
“He [Shawaryn] keeps getting better, but you can’t put … Read More »

When the B1G scheduled Maryland as Ohio State’s opponent for the Buckeyes’ seventh annual Showdown in the Shoe, they probably knew it would be a showcase for Big Ten lacrosse but it’s impossible to know whether anyone anticipated the number of elements that would combine to add layers of significance to the contest. You see, because of its timing, the Showdown in the Shoe is the most important date on Ohio State’s lacrosse calendar. The game … Read More »
Honor the past. Compete in the present. Build for the future. Three traits every successful college athletic program share. Maryland volleyball displayed a bit of all three over the past few weeks.
Since his arrival at Maryland, head coach Steve Aird’s mantra has been, “I’m building a program.” The earliest evidence of that came when he chose to honor the commitments of the previous staff and set his sights on recruiting two, three and four years down the road. And … Read More »
My take—Taylor Cummings, Megan Whittle and Brooke Griffin might just be the most potent offensive trio in the history of the sport.
Maryland top ranked women’s lacrosse team made the short trip up I-95 to take on the 17th ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. It was a game that could start a budding rivalry. Maryland coach Cathy Reese described it as “a rivalry we haven’t had. Our girls were fired up today. It was an exciting rivalry to kind of … Read More »
It was, by no means, their best effort of the season. The first half was particularly lackluster but the Maryland men’s lacrosse team pulled things together with an emphatic five goal run to escape Rutgers with their second straight one goal win this time a 9-8 decision improving their record to 11-1 for the season and 3-0 in Big Ten play.
In the early going, the pipe was not Maryland’s friend as both Matt Rambo and Joe LoCascio found the … Read More »
The Maryland women’s lacrosse team took their perfect 13-0 (2-0 B1G) on the road to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes. There’s a bit of history between the two programs with the Terps holding an 8-1 edge all time.
The game got off to a bit of a sloppy start with freshman Megan whittle turning the ball over after Taylor Cummings won the opening draw. The Terps returned the favor forcing a Buckeyes turnover after a patient Ohio State … Read More »
Following Wednesday’s puzzling rout at the hands of George Washington, the Maryland baseball team opened an important Big Ten series Friday night hosting the Iowa Hawkeyes. The 24-8 Terps are ranked between 16 and 21 in the various polls while the 21-9 Hawkeyes are ranked as high as 17th in one poll and are unranked in others. Still, Iowa came to College Park undefeated in B1G play sitting atop the conference with a 6-0 record. They returned to their hotel … Read More »
In the end, it was just too much. Too much UConn. Too much talent. Too much balance. Too much precision. Too much Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck. And there is neither shame nor disgrace in that. Because the Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball is usually too much for anyone in NCAA women’s basketball.
As I noted in my preview, UConn has lost 12 games since the beginning of the 2009-10 season. Seven of those came to a Skylar Diggins led … Read More »
So, the question is: Who can beat UConn? I’d be willing to bet on Kentucky. If it’s the team coached by John Calipari not the one coached by Matthew Mitchell, that is. Of late, there are not many women’s teams that can accomplish or say they’ve managed a win over Connecticut. How about this for a picture? Here are the collective records in this decade of the teams in this year’s Women’s Final Four. (Actually, the list starts with … Read More »
